Janice Fixter

When not writing poetry she juggles time between company accounts, a parenting charity and taxiing children around.

a kind of slow motion is her second poetry collection.

publications:

Fixter's deceptively simple work is powerfully attractive...

Janice has a fine ear for the rhythm of line and stanza and the silences that lie between them ...

Her First Flight from a kind of slow motion

Banking away from the ozone,

the sky’s skin,

smelling of geraniums

and childhood,

the plane descends slowly

to where the air is thicker

above the archipelago –

broken slabs of land afloat in the Baltic.

The summer sun is burning the blueness

out of the sea

it will balance all night

along the horizon

ripening cloudberries

and reindeer.

She will be unable to sleep,

her body adrift in descent

like a feather preened from the wing

of a snowy owl –

falling

into unquenchable Arctic light.
